About Bayer Crop Science Belgium
Bayer Crop Science Belgium offers innovative and sustainable solutions for protecting crops against weeds, fungi and plagues as well as products for the treatment of seeds. They are one of the most innovative and leading companies in the field of crop protection.
The Computational Life Science (CLS) team of Bayer Crop Science is responsible for the implementation, integration and maintenance of applications and databases. The goal of the CLS team is to boost R&D productivity by turning scientific data into assets.
One of the projects at CLS is phasing out the Sybase DB. Therefor data needs to be replicated from Sybase to Oracle, this is because some old legacy systems are still using Sybase as backend DB.
The Oracle database is primarily used for storing experiment data, crop metadata and shipment metadata. This database needs to be available 24/7 as scientists over the entire world use it for reporting and experiment validation purposes. All authorized employees should be able to consult the scientific information in the databases at any given time. Response time and accessibility are the key performance parameters.
A short history
2011
A part of the databases of Bayer Crop Science Belgium are running on Oracle Solaris Cluster Systems. Because the Solaris Cluster Systems are underused, Exitas allocates some additional databases to Solaris Clusters.
2013
The existing hardware of the Solaris Clusters System is too expensive and the setup rather complex. Assuring in-house expertise of this platform has become inefficient and unjustifiable cost wise. Exitas recommends a migration to a new platform that will be cheaper, simpler and easy to maintain: a full database migration to Oracle Database Appliance (ODA) X3-2. Bayer Crop Science benefits from increased power and memory space, a shorter response time and reduced deployment and maintenance costs.

- Maintenance and performance tuning for: Oracle GoldenGate for the synchronization of Sybase and Oracle, System Database and Active standby databases
- ODA updates for firmware, operating system (OS), grid, ORACLE RDBMS (Relational Database Management System)

Solutions
For more than 10 years Exitas was and still is responsible for:
- The transfer of the existing plants and seeds database to Oracle Database Appliance (ODA) x3.2.
- The optimization of the data load performance and the backup procedure:
- Data loads: from more than 1 week to less than 1 hour
- Backup running time: 6 times faster
- The maintenance and the continued monitoring of the Oracle databases system.
This includes: deploying all database instances, scaling them, recovering them if they fail, taking backups, upgrading them to newer versions and the screening of slow running queries or sub optimal configuration parameters.

SINGLE-SIGN-ON IMPLEMENTATIE VOOR DE APPLICATIES VAN MAZDA
Mazda Motor Logistics Europe (MLE) is een logistiek distributiecentrum dat vanuit Willebroek onderdelen levert aan 2.300 Europese Mazda verdelers. Dit doen ze via 22 nationale verkooporganisaties. Ook voor IT en financiële dienstverlening kunnen de nationale invoerders bij MLE terecht.
Voor het bouwen van software oplossingen werkt Mazda met Oracle en Java technologie. Daarbij hecht het steeds meer belang aan mobiele applicaties. De Mazda-omgeving sluit dus perfect aan bij de sterke pijlers van Contribute. Wij vroegen meer uitleg aan Jef Oltenfreiter en Bram Bruneel, respectievelijk Manager IS Development en Java team lead bij MLE.
Stand van zaken
“Het is een project met heel wat uitdagingen. We combineren verschillende technologieën in een development track. Hierdoor heb je teams met verschillende expertise nodig hebt. Er zijn dus meer challenges dan je in een klassiek project verwacht, omwille van het hogere aantal variabelen en omgevingsfactoren. Toch verloopt het project over het algemeen heel goed en hebben we toch al enkele successen geboekt.
Het Siebel e-dealer project is hier een voorbeeld van. Met Oracle Business Intelligence zitten we nu in de UAT-fase. Hier hebben we de SSO effectief gekoppeld en streven we ernaar om binnen afzienbare tijd in productie te gaan. Op latere datum volgen dan e-Business Suite (EBS) en Oracle Transportation Manager (OTM).”
Oracle als strategische keuze
Mazda Corporation heeft een Unlimited License Agreement (ULA) met Oracle. De corporate strategy bepaalt dat ze voor nieuwe implementaties moderne, gestructureerde totaaloplossingen moeten voorzien.
Met andere woorden, als er een pakket bestaat dat aan onze business behoeften voldoet, zullen ze een implementatie doen van dat betreffende pakket. Als er dan nog specifieke automotive processen niet worden ondersteund, ontwikkelen ze die ondersteuning zelf.
Vanuit Mazda Corporation is er besloten om met geüniformeerde Oracle systemen te werken. Hierbij hebben de Oracle pakketten een sterke meerwaarde voor grote ondernemingen. Die wereldwijde strategie sijpelt door naar de regio’s.
Zoals vanuit het corporate niveau is beslist om met Oracle te werken en deze beslissing nu ook regionaal is doorgevoerd, werkt dit ook in de omgekeerde richting. Zo hebben ze bij MLE recent Oracle Exalogic en Exadata aangekocht. Hierin willen ze zoveel mogelijk van hun data onderbrengen. In een eerste fase zullen ze hun volledige Oracle stack hierin onderbrengen. Daarna zullen ze hun legacy applicaties toevoegen.
Op dit moment zijn ze nog uniek bij Mazda Motor Logistics Europe (MLE), maar als ze hierin succesvol zijn, is de kans groot dat andere regio’s zoals Amerika of Azië deze manier van werken in de toekomst overnemen. De verschillende regio’s zitten namelijk regelmatig samen voor overleg en het delen van kennis.
Partnership in wederzijds vertrouwen
We werken nu al twee jaar samen met Contribute. Het partnerschap dat we hebben opgebouwd is heel productief. Contribute denkt met ons mee, betrekt ons via workshops, seminaries en events. En ze voorzien altijd in de behoeften van onze business.
Ze zijn altijd proactief in hun pre-sales en tonen ze altijd opnieuw hun oprechte toewijding. Ze doen er alles aan om onze behoeften te begrijpen en er vervolgens op in te spelen. Dat is van onschatbare waarde.
Ook voor onze java-applicaties hebben we met Contribute een sterke band uitgebouwd. We schakelen hun consultants in voor onze belangrijke operationele applicaties in specifieke business departementen. Het gaat hier om echte ontwikkelaars die destijds het tweede ontwikkelingsdepartement vanuit Leverkusen naar hier hebben verhuisd en zo het IT-departement te centraliseren.
Bij Mazda denken we op lange termijn en Contribute heeft al meerdere keren bewezen dat zij deze visie mee ondersteunen. Dat is voor ons heel belangrijk. Er staan bij Mazda nog heel wat uitdagende projecten op stapel. Met Contribute als partner gaan we deze uitdagingen met alle vertrouwen aan.
